Aqua Signal Maputo Red / White LED food storage light - 2011

December 2011 - Marina Kona Kai Shelter Island San Diego, CA
To install the Aqua Signal Maputo Red / White LED Multipurpose Interior Light into the food storage, which is under the lower step (1978 Freeport),  we had to cut a grove into the side of the plywood veneer so the wire would go up and over the light.
The light is the kind that wire comes out the back. So out came the dremel and we stuffed a cardboard box into the step whole to keep it open. We also drilled a hole through to the back of the nav station so we could hook it up to power. We did not get that far. Then Debbie held the door open and we removed the box so we had room to install the light (screw it into the cabinet upper side).
First we had to clean out the cabinet. This is what was in there and there was still plenty of room!
We had to run the wires along the top of the light for a ways to reach the back of the nav station. This way the switch to the light which is part of the light could be easily reached.  This sounds confusing to me but once you see the pic of it all done you’ll understand.
This is another project that will make life nicer. We currently need to hold the step up with one hand and shine a flash light into the area to see what we want and where it is. Then put down the light and go fish.
Now hold the step and turn on the light, grab the goods and be gone!

We would add a bracket to hold open the step but because of the safety factor will not do that.

For instance:
I open the step and secure the bracket or it automatically holds open the step. I get what I want and turn to place it in the galley. Debbie walks into the companion way and steps onto the step (which is open, not there) from the cockpit and does a header. Hmmm no bracket will be installed and that is probably why Islander did not install them on the steps.

This is still ongoing. Got the light mounted but still need to do some wiring.
It is one of those projects that gets done when there is a lull in the action of the major projects. In this case the engine installation.
