Hydraulic Wire Crimping Tool for windless and others at Harbor Freight - 2010

We went to Harbor Freight today and picked up a Hydraulic Wire Crimping Tool and a pair of wire cutters and some long wire ties and a screw driver.

Teak and Holly shade of color - 2010

December 2011 - At Marina Cortez, San Diego, CA
Possibly we can go with Owen to pick out the teak and Holy sole.
We will take some water and a rag as it is said that if you swipe the wood with a wet rag it will show what the teak will look like when varnished.

Bidding process for inside teak deck - 2010

The bidding process,
We got bids from a variety of places.
Our budgeted price for the project was $4000.00 dollars.
We are not in any real hurry although we would like to get the deck in right after the engine goes in, but we can wait.

ClickClak containers purchased - 2010

We ordered a bunch of ClickClak containers for a canister set on the boat from amazon.com. We have tried several types and like these best. They are airtight and keep the moisture out. The tops do not get goober up with the stuff inside.

Water water but where from?

If you look closely at this pic you can see what looks like a scupper in the ply wood and a scupper type of path in the fiberglass. Got to look into the paint.
What is happening is when it rains we are getting water from this spot that drains to the very upper bilge then to the under engine bilge then to the lower bilge.. A lot, like a couple inches in the lower bilge.
We have looked all over the starboard side of the boat while it is raining and do not see where the water would be coming from.
At first we thought it was from the mast but now that the engine is out it is clear to us that this in not from the mast.
Debbie filled the water tanks and then painted the bilge. It took several hours to paint the bilge and then we hung out for a while and so foth. Not a drop of water in the bilge. So we are thinking it is not the water tank.
We can let the boat sit for days and if there is no rain the bilge stays dry.
We will test it out by re-filling the water tanks to max then with no rain let it sit for a few days.

Head hooks and such - 2010

We decided to put up some hooks in the head. We did not want to have them in the way. We waited until we used the head a bit before we decided where to put them. As it stands now, one will go by the shower head and another under the shelf.  The two prong one will go by the shower head.

Window shade screens

Here is Debbie working on the window shad screens.  Big job, lots of are to cut with scissors and sew etc.
Debbie is make two at the same time!

companion way hatch sliders

Finally got another coat of varnish on the companion way hatch sliders. That is just coat three.
It is the rain and all the other projects that are stalling this one. Plus it now gets dark at about 4:30 PM!

Under shower grate, cleaned up - 2010

In anticipation of putting down the varnished shower grate we cleaned up under where it goes. It was really dirty. Had lots of old varnish drips and general dirt, trash and well I am not going to through myself under the buss any more. Let’s just say it took a while to clean up.

Teak grain matching

Got the new piece of teak from:

C.S. Ferguson (Shane)
Custom Woodworking
1095 Scot Street
San Diego Ca
Shop 619 224 7544

The grain looks much close to what the bulkhead is.
Now to teak oil it up so it will match the shade closer then wash it with TSP and then put abut 5 coats of varnish on it to catch up with the bulkhead.
Then install it.

Bulkhead grain
As you can see the new piece matches the grain of the bulkhead much better
Just call me anal Chip!

Third quote for Teak and holy deck - 2010

We got another quote today. $2270.00 materials $6000.00 labor

Got the shower curtain for the head - 2010

Debbie and I went to Bed Bath and Beyond the other day. We picked up a shower curtain for the boat. It is the same one we have at home that we like. It is the hookless type and sits on a curved rod.

Port window shade screen paper template made - 2010

Debbie made a template of the port salon windows for a shade screen cover. We hate to put snap holes in the boat probably like everyone else but for saving the windows from UV rays it is worth it.  They are the major reason for the crazing and  a big source of heat in the boat. In Mexico we will be glad we did.

Frost Hardwood Lumber Co for Teak and holly - 2010

December 2010 - At Marina Cortez, San Diego, CA
We went to Frost Lumber today looking at sheets of ½ plywood veneered with teak and holy. It was real light in color the 1/2 stuff.

Bed spread got varnished, oops! - 2010

Because I am such a klutz sometimes, I spilled varnish on the bead spread that is on the boat.

Dave and Sam on s\v Islena - dock mates off for week long sail - 2010

Hinze - dock mate, Marina Cortez - 2010

That's his boat in the background with the red kayak on it  a 43’ CC sloop.

30 amp main circuit breaker

The 30 amp main circuit breaker we put in an old teak cup holder and we picked up some” L” brackets to hold it in place. This is a temporary placement for a while. As we progress (add heat and AC ect) we will know more of where we are going the electrical panels. We will probably replace the panels but not for a while.
Also I am learning this as we go along and taking small steps. It is the re-powering that is getting most of our attention right now.
We picked up about 12’ of 10/3 110 wire for the hook up also at Marine Exchange.
They had the best price for the breaker betting online.
We will mount it behind the nav station above the charger\inverter.
Not the best mounting job but it will do the job and not be seen.

Secondt teak and holly deck quote, Owen - 2010

2011 - At Marina Cortez, San Diego, CA
Got another bid on the teak and holly decking for the inside of the boat.
This guy is Open and we liked him. He is a dock mate and gets good reviews from around our marina. He has had a wood working shop in Granada and has owned a few wooden boats including a 100’ schooner.
He is a shipwright by trade.
We need some questions answered but so far so good.
For ½ plywood veneered teak and holly sole with all nine hatches framed in his price is $3,415.00.
We have one more person coming tomorrow and one bidder we have not yet gotten a price from.
Baring anything unusual we will probably go with Owen.

Engine room paint

That person in the white is Debbie!
Debbie washed or I should say scrubbed the whole bilge again and then painted it out with Interlux Bilgekote paint.

OK I am that anal!

I just had to remove the cover piece of teak and send it back to the wood working shop so they could re-do it with the correct grain. It was not there falt as I did not notice the grain was off till I started varnishing. I had asked for straight up and down grain.
We have uses for the old pice so it will not go to waist.

Engine room shaft nibble prep for glassing -2010

While Debbie was cleaning the bilge, I prepped the shaft for the fiberglass strengthening of the lube hose fitting.

Water tank gauge

We were going to add water tank gauges but we have decided not to. It is the time, expense and labor for such a project. We do not think it is warranted.

Our main concern was not dock side as filling up the tanks is not a problem. It is using the water maker.
We do not want to leave open the engine  hatch while we make water say 1-2 ours every other day, It is an accident waiting to happen.
We think with a quick look at the sight gauges we have we can determine how much water to make and close the hatch. So remote gauges would be nice but now however we are comfortable with what we have :).

We were going to use the:
Gobius tank measuring device (for water and fuel)
Gobius is the first and only level indicator in the world that can measure the contents in tanks made of any material, such as plastic, stainless steel, steel, aluminum and fibre glass, from the outside. Since it measures from the outside cleaning the tank or drilling holes is unnecessary.
We would need two, one set for each tank.

Gobius tank measuring device

What we have:

Double common sense fasteners

I called sailrite.com the other day and asked them how to install the double common sense fasteners in place of the sing ones while the bimini and dodger are still installed on the boat.
The tool we use to install them is a die to hold the snap  and a punch to set the snp shank into the fastener. Obviously you can not do this while the canvas is up on the boat.
There are way expensive tools for this but lets face it we are not going to be buying them.
We do have a snap tool that is worth the expense and I tried it but could not get the die past the common sense fastener.

Sailrite told be to take the set die out of the tool and it would slip past the fastener.
I played with it today and will try it on the boat soon. I have an idea how to get it to work now that Sailrite gave me the idea.
Let you know. This may be confusing now but what we want to do is attach two items to one fastener. They make the Common sense fasteners that can do that they are just a little longer. It is replacing the original ones without removing the dodger and bimini to do it is the problem. There are just three we want to change.

Over head light

The overhead light that has a wood box with a grated plastic lens is not going to work out. We had a florescent light in our last place we lived and it looked similar, dated etc. Debbie does not like it.
We will continue the search!
Not going to win the styling test.

Hinges for cabinets -spring loaded

We tried the new hinges from Sand Diego Hardware (SDH) in place of the ones from West Marine.
The price difference was big. The quality was also large. The plating on the ones from SDH is not very good.
They both fit the same and the holes were the same.
It will be a decision to be made later. Because I have already spent the $$ for the WM ones, we will put them back on. They are much nicer.
We are hoping we can get the original ones re-plated. Because there are about 4-5 pair on board of the spring hinges it may be worth it to take them to the plating shop. They fit corectly and are not made any more. We will be checking it out.

We just ordered the two reading lights for the stateroom. They will go under the cabinet over the bed.
We bought them from defender.com.
We went through all the lights we could find for the few weeks and these are the ones we both liked the best for that particular spot. They also got good revues from practical-sailor.com.

Wood rot under galley foot pump - - the water path - 2010

With all the rain we just had we were able to find the leak(s) that were rotting the wood under the galley foot pump. The water was coming from the stern port chain plate and the port forward scupper.

Eureka - Ez kleen vacume

We had a hand held vac on our Catalina. It was an older popular one that I cannot remember the name of. We sold it at the Marine Swap Meet. It would blow around the dirt as you tried to vacuum because the out air was on the side. So like in the cockpit it would be blowing the dirt all over.
This one has the exhaust on the back and so does not do that. Also the front brush cover swivels so you can do the upholstery.  It has a hose nozzle that stores in the back.
We also bought an accessory kit for it.  It includes a longer hose and some nozzles, like the brush nozzle which I use a lot to vacuum the sanded varnish.
We had carpet down in the boat and the edges frayed. It got all caught up in the brush roller of the vacuum. I have the vacuum home and need to take the roller out and clean it out so it will work again. Works just cannot use the roller function.

Ground and heat shrink

I called the supplier to tell him that the heat shrink on the cable was too short.
You can see where my finger is that the wire shows. The bend is close but it is not enough to cause this in my opinion.
genuinedealz.com

The supplier did  send a piece of heat shrink, I will add a piece with the new cable for the chassis ground of the charger inverter.

1-18 AWG black 14 foot 3/8 for the 600 amp bus and none on the other end.
The naked end will get striped and the cable put in a set screw. I think it is a little long but I can cut it off to fit it.

Synthetic teak and holly sole? - 2010

December 2010 - At Marina Cortez, San Diego, CA
We got our quote on the teak and holly sole from the second person he is primarily a synthetic flooring person.

Galley cabinets

Not all the Freeports are the same. On our 1978 Freeport the galley setup to the right of under the sink looks like this. These hoses went to a PVC “T” behind the cabinet where we keep the pans.

I do not know of any differences between the 78 and 79 Freeports, but for the doors.
The doors have a rounded top on the 78 and a square top on the 79. As the square top looks like it has been re-enforced on the 79 I have never heard of any problems with the doors. My preference is for the rounded tops.

Nav light

The nav station LED light has a
  • White light
  • A red light
  • A night lite

Works with the touch of a finger.
