Garhauer Outboard Motor Lift - Engine lift stern bracket and Air Breeze stern bracket - 2011

We picked up the engine lift bracket from Benchmark Custom Welding and it looks great.
The round end is where the ball for the outboard lift will attach. The square end will attach to the back of the boat.

Nav station panel

There was some in-between-time while working on projects so a simple little project was chosen to fill the time. This would be removing the VFH radio and wires and the Xantrex control panel. Now there is the bilge alarm to be removed from the plywood that is the temperarly place holder for these items.

The radio does not work any more because we removed the antenna from the stern pulpit to make room for the wind generator pole. The new antenna will probably go on the mast head.
The Xantrex control panel will go over the lower round hole you see. There is also an in-active toggle switch there that will be used to control the light on the Xanterx control panel This will save amps but mainly keep the air port affect down. You know lots of LED lights all over the place.

There will be a thermostat for the AC\Heat on the top hole for the salon galley etc area.
The bilge alarm, will go in behind nav station and be wired to a loud siren. The on\off switch for the siren will go on the electrical panel. There is a couple of in-active switches there.

You can see the replacement piece of teak sitting on the desktop

So now this is almost removed. The bilge alarm is still working and we do not want it to be dis-connected so this will take a while longer. We have a piece of teak that will take the place of the plywood place holder. It has about five coats of varnish on it now. We will put in place and then when we do electronics it will get a SSB radio and  a New VFH radio with AIS.

Macerator through hull fitting installation - 2011

June 2011 - At Marina Cortez Harbor Island, San Diego, CA
Dave from s\v Islena our dock mate came by, he is a diver. He asked if we were ready and yes was the answer.

Templates for the wisker pole holes - mounted - 2017

We had some left over 3M 5200 so we used it to attach the two pieces of teak that we had made up at C. S. Furgison’s. The cover the PO’s spinnaker pole holes. That darn pole ran all the way through the stateroom! :)

Electric air pump - wiring connectors

Wow that was fast! The order from McMaster-Carr came already!

These handle up to 30 amps and 8 awg wire.

The SCOPREGA S.P.A. 12 HPP High-Pressure Inflator pump Consumes 15-20 amps
So at 28' with 10 awg there will be a 10 per cent (9.58) which is OK for the pump (that is the max length with 10 awg).
More feet use 8 awg wire
This way we can get rid of the battery clips and use a plug system and longer reach

Templates for the wisker pole holes

We picked up our teak cover prices at C.S, Ferguson and they match up nicely with the grain on the teak bulkhead. Probably today if we have enough 3M 5200 left over from the through hole installation we will mount the teak covers over the old spinnaker hole the PO made.
The PO used the piece of teak that came from drilling the hole as a plug. He put a knob on one side as a handle and for hanging something. You can see it in the picture. We sent it with our request to C.S, Ferguson for a sample.

Magnet - retrieving out of the bilge

Ok we were surprised at how small the magnet is! Yet it should still work fine. For some reason (like not paying attention to the specs) I thought it would be bigger J. It still pulls 2 pounds or so and that was what I was going for, along with price. Guess we will need to test it out on something. Most stuff we drop into the bilge is stainless steel though. It should not be difficult to find a something to let fly down under!

Refer - epoxy with bubbles - 2011

June 2011 - At Marina Cortez, San Diego, CA
Under top of refer
Being Tuesday knight Debbie worked on the refer.

Original bilge pump - spun motor - 2011

Took another look see with what’s up with the bilge pump. The electric motor does not spin.

Brackets for macerator pump shelf

Debbie purchased two "L" brackets from Grangers.
grainger.com

They are galvanized and heavy duty. We tried to get them at ME but ME only had one. I asked them when they were going to get more and he said that a guy makes them only does so when he gets enough orders. He makes them in his garage. So it may be a while before they get any in. Debbie looked all around but no SS were found at a reasonable price.

We will go with these for now. They will be under the bed and holding the shelf that the macerator pump will sit on. They should do fine there.

New macerator through hull and 1 1\2 inch through hull valve and elbow - 2011

Went to Marine Exchange and picked up a:

1 ½ inch through hull fitting
1 ½ inch valve
1 ½ inch hose barb

Anniversary motor (19 great years) to South Western YC - 2011

Our anniversary motor (19 great years) to South Western Yacht Club (SWYC) was just fine.
We had a beautiful July night on the bay with little boat traffic so no big motor sport fishing or other wakes to deal with.

Kayak - Stohlquist TREKKer PFD's

We were shopping for new life vests (PFD's) to use with our new kayaks. I found some I thought we would like at REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) - Stohlquist TREKKer PFD but they were a little expensive.
rei.com

Then Debbie was in REI with our daughter and it happened to be the first day of their summer sale so she looked at the same vests were on sale. She called me wondering if these were the ones I saw and liked which they were!! So, we now have two new PFD's for kayaking. Mine is red and hers is blue, in the woman's model.

Salon courtesy lights

While doing a motor at dusk we turned on our courtesy lights to see how they perform under sail\power.
They were handy and are better than the video shows. They do lite up the deck in the stateroom and the step down also into the stateroom. They light up the salon area (not shown in the video) and galley. Add the red option for the light under the head vanity and you can completely navigate the boat in the darkness (it was only dusk but you get the idea) with the red lights glowing. We did not try the nav station red LED light. All the lights we tried are LED.

Short video on the lights
We think a couple of LED red courtesy lights in the cockpit may be nice on a separate switch.

Mattress topper

The mattress topper came. Oh wait we did not mention we were getting a mattress topper? Yes we got one and it was more or less a present. A fellow FOGger wrote in the forum that he was buying a new mattress and was going to send the almost new mattress topper he had custom made for the Freeport Pullman berth to the dumpster if no one wanted it. So for the price of shipping we now have one. This may be particularly good for us as we have already posted how our matters is the same as if we store bought it except there is no cloth surrounding it or topper. I actually did not even know they made such a thing :)

We unpacked it and spread it out on the un-maid bed. It is a bit small. We are thinking that his mattress is not as thick. Ours is 6.5 inches thick so it spreads out more along the hull. In other words it has more volume or is bigger as the hull goes out more the higher you go. This is only a guess because the bed was un-maid and we really need to try it with just the foam. It does seem like it would add another degree of comfort to the mattress.

Propane locker - Paint - 2011

Some fellow dock mates recommended some two-part paint for the propane locker and the refer.

Need to prime it then paint the next day paint.
A quart should do it for propane locker and maybe there will be enough for the refer

New Stewart Warner fuel gauge

While at ME we picked up a new fuel gauge. Now that may seem like why now but let me tell you it is a pain not knowing how much fuel you have. We have dock mates that use a dip stick and that is fine but on our boat we would need to add a access plate in both the cockpit sole and the fuel tank. We have a fuel gauge but when we sold the Perkins diesel motor the old control panel went with it.

Old panel - with fuel gauge
No panel

There was a fuel gauge in the control panel for the fuel tank. The sender is still in the tank.

Phil removed the control panel and gave it to the new owner of our engine. He did not remove the fuel gauge. So we did not realize the new

Beta engine panel does not have a fuel gauge.

I guess why should it as it is only for the engine. Still you would think this would not have slipped through the cracks.

So now where to mount it?
Will it work with our old sending unite?
If so will it be accurate?

Guess with our vacation coming up and the 4th holiday we are not going out for a while so this project will go to the back burner, maybe.

Sailing - to not see land

Saturday we went sailing. Our goal was to sail out beyond the sight of land.

Thew sun was out and the sea state was kind

The wind god (aeolus) had a different idea.

A nice sail into the deep blue sea

The wind was coming out of the west the whole time. It was supposed to come out of the south.

We sailed and sailed and threw in a couple of tacks but ran out of time. The sun went away and the seas built to four feet with a little cross swell.

We had a few guests onboard and they were getting queasy and one actually got sick. Eventually we headed back and inside buoy one we started the engine and did a sea lion tour inside the harbor and went back to the slip. It was a nice sail as the winds were nice and consistent till the end when they dies as we tried to sail into the San Diego channel. The sun went away as we got out to sea but as we returned to the harbor it was out again. One guest is from Ramona and sad it was about 85 deg when he left and was getting hotter. When we were out to sea it was about 65 deg. Goes to show ya!

Removing the varnish from the eye brow - 2011

Because it is the nice long summer days it is time for outside work!

Cap rail varnish removal

We were going to a yacht club happy hour so I picked a project to work on that did not require much setup time. Also I could just stand up, no kneeling or stooping. The cap rail was the choice!
Got the heat gun out and a putty knife and went to heating it up and stripping of the old varnish!
Got I am guessing about 14' foot done, ya!

Was able to keep it all on the boat

Only section  that was done on the outer edge

Garhauer Outboard motor lift - setup

June 2011 San Diego, CA

Hinze and I went over the Garhauer outboard motor lift options and wind generator options and decide it was better to have both in our case then trying to combine them. We ordered up a bracket from Benchmark Custom Welding today and it will be ready next week.

Mattress Frolis system - box spring

We are still talking with Elke at Froli.

We will probably go with this system as a FOGger has been happy with it.

"We actually went with the Froli springs on our new to us boat. They were easy to assemble and between adjusting spring spacing, spring tension and clips you can adjust for firmer or softer areas. They also form an air gap to keep moisture/condensation under control. We have 4 inch foam cushions on top. I'm no lightweight, so over a couple weeks I ended up adjusting the springs a little firmer and a then a little firmer, I can now say its as comfortable as my bed at home, but at first I would feel some spots where it felt like the springs were bottoming out.

If you need to get access to the storage areas under the berth you may want to assemble the Froli in separate sections, so you can just pull out a small portion instead of the entire spring system, since it is awkward to move once it is in place.

If you look at their site online they have templates that can tell you exactly how many springs you need once you measure your berth.
So with some trial and error, its as good as an innerspring mattress, but you also get something that creates an air gap under your cushions."

Original bilge pump - motor? - 2011

At the used part store Sea Chest, I saw these and really wanted to purchase them. Not to be because they are way down on the wish list and not even on the need list. The spring-loaded ones we have on the jib track are not too hard on the feet when kicked accidently and do work.

PLYC happy hour at the SGYC - 2011

May 2011 - Marina Cortez San Diego, CA
Debbie and I we went to the Point Loma Yacht Club (PLYC) happy hour.

Mattress Frolis system - box spring

We got a response from Debbie inquire from Froils web site:

"We have previously outfitted the forward pullman of the Islander Freeport, Plan B, with our Froli Travel v-berth package Large, plus one additional Expansion Pack of the large springs. Based on your dimensions, however, I don't think that the additional Expansion Pack is needed, so I would recommend going with the large v-berth set. This gives you 72 large springs (56 regular, 16 soft, plus 12 small springs, and 14 tension clips)."

It is interesting they have already done a Freeport B, now to find out who.
Debbie is still in talks with this package and what we need.

Dinner on the docks at Marina Cortez San Diego - 2011

June 2011 - Marina Cortez San Diego, CA
It was the typical over cast beach marine layer evening at the dock. The longest day of the year just passed and summer has just started. Our sprites are high!

Mattress Frolis system - box spring

We now are looking at the Frolis system for under our foam mattress.
It is recommended by Practical Sailor and some time ago I saw it advertised. Debbie just found it and we are seriously considering this system.

Garhauer Outboard motor lift - Creating stern bracket template - 2011

Measuring the angle for the bracket.
We did some more measuring for the Garhauer outboard motor lift. This time I think we got it right. Not sure so tonight at the dock BBQ we will ask some dock mates if we are missing anything.

Horseshoe Buoy Holder

We just purchased a new Horseshoe Buoy Holder from Defender Marine. We have had a couple other hangers but did not like them much.
This we wanted to use for our next sail but it will not be here in time. We will just have the Horseshoe Buoy Holder hanging around for use if needed.

Out of the way while we were working in cockpit

Horseshoe Buoy Holder - For 1" rail mounting
The Railfast® horseshoe mounting bracket is a must for any sailboat. The electro-polished stainless steel bracket is bent precisely so it will hold a standard horseshoe ring securely without the need of a retaining strap, speeding deployment in case of emergency.

We are not hanging up our Life Sling until we get the wind generator pole mounts figured out.
