Double common sense fasteners

I called sailrite.com the other day and asked them how to install the double common sense fasteners in place of the sing ones while the bimini and dodger are still installed on the boat.
The tool we use to install them is a die to hold the snap  and a punch to set the snp shank into the fastener. Obviously you can not do this while the canvas is up on the boat.
There are way expensive tools for this but lets face it we are not going to be buying them.
We do have a snap tool that is worth the expense and I tried it but could not get the die past the common sense fastener.

Sailrite told be to take the set die out of the tool and it would slip past the fastener.
I played with it today and will try it on the boat soon. I have an idea how to get it to work now that Sailrite gave me the idea.
Let you know. This may be confusing now but what we want to do is attach two items to one fastener. They make the Common sense fasteners that can do that they are just a little longer. It is replacing the original ones without removing the dodger and bimini to do it is the problem. There are just three we want to change.
