Beta 38 hp Deisel engine Sea trials - 2011

Sea trials for our Beta 38 hp engine
We should be at hull speed at 2500 rpm
We got to 3200 rpm but we should get to 3600 so we are over propped.

March 2011 - At Marina Cortez Harbor IslandSan Diego, CA

We will be installing a three blade prop very soon and will go out on sea trials again. This time with a working GPS so we know how fast we are going at different rpm’s.
The sea trials went well. We had the floor boards off the entire time and they are not insulated yet as we are installing a new teak and holly sole.
It was still quieter than the Perkins with the floor boards on. Plus we were doing 1000 more rpm or more a lot of the time.
The Beta Marine (Koba) runs very smoothly.

The engine controls are a little different. We have the same controls but the location of neutral is now more aft. We will either adjust it or get used to it. The transmission shifts as smoothly as the Perkins transmission. Forward throttle works the same as before.
We can actually step down into the engine room and change the Racor filter or oil filter etc. There is room on each side to do engine work which of course we hope not to and there is access to the lower bilge and shaft and PSS Shaft Seal with the Racor fuel filters forward. We could also remove the starting battery and shelf for more shaft access.
The bilge needs some touch up painting and the zinc that we put on the shaft came off. It was for a backup measure for the PSS Shaft Seal. So it would not come loose. There is a SS one made that we will get as the zinc is not the best quality for this purpose.

We also are still working on the bilge pumps and hoses.

We need to re-install the dorad vent hoses so the raw water intake hose needs to  be moved, Phil will do that when he installs the three blade prop and water heater hoses.
And just one hour on the hour meter!
How fast we going?
Still have the protective plastic on, same as our house, no no not really just here for now😊
We went over to Phil’s boat so he could pick up a GPS. Ours is not wired up, our Garmin 276c. The battery went dead and is no good. It would need new firmware and costs too much so we were going to use it as back up. Just never got it wired to the batteries yet.
We had to pull up to Phil’s boat which is on a mooring ball and drop him off, without hitting anything J. We did OK. We went to the leeward side so the wind would blow us off. Did the same thing picking him up. It was a little challenge as the controls are different.
Debbie had the same problem docking the boat. Guess we will need to do some practicing. It will change again with the three blade prop.
Phil picked up two GPS’s and we could not get either to work.
