Academic Computing Sail

082110

Saturday we went sailing on a NU Academic Computing sail. That is the name of the department I work in at my University.

Two colleagues and I (the boss could not make it) and one roommate went out along with my wife Debbie.

The departure time was 11:00 AM and arrival time was 4:00 PM. We mostly made both.

Departed a little late and came back ten minutes early.

We furnished the sandwiches and the water, anything else the guests brought.

Only one person drank alcohol and only moderately.

No smokers!

No cell phones!

We hoisted the main right out of the slip after we entered the channel to the harbor. Bob mostly did that (Joes roommate).

I asked the guys to remove all the fenders and place them in the lazeratte.

Sure is nice to have crew!

We then motor sailed into Americas Cup Harbor and did a little tour of it.

It was blue when they filmed here

Tere is Red Sails Inn guest slip inbetween the two power boats on th eright.
Not an easy dock with a 36' sail boat.

We then left ACH and popped the jib as we got into the bay. It was a lot of sailing from there. The Wind was coming out of the North West and it was about 15 knots. We let out the sails so as to not have too much heel and cruised all the way out to the first buoy of the San Diego channel. No tacking needed. We all took turns at the helm but it was mostly Joe and Bob. Everyone did well with no accidental jibes etc.

Passwd this old beat up Car ship comming into San Diego

We saw a dock mate Heinze coming in by the point on his Gulfstar 42 CC.

There was a decent size rolling swell which made it more fun. With the boat de-powered a bit we could all move around the boat fine and were comfortable, not pounding into the swell.

At the outer buoy we did a jibe and cruised back in. There was a lot of boat traffic at the mouth of the harbor but the guys handled it fine even while pinching.
Bob at the helm on our way out of the harbor

We pulled in the jib inside the harbor (watching time) and motored to the sea lions at the bait docks, a favorite place for everyone.

 They have it made!

Leaving bait tanks for Shelter island -  Motoring with the main up

Beach going into Shelter Island basin

We then did a motor sail tour of the Shelter island basin. Then a motor sail back to the dock.

Joe on the boats' guitar as we sailed about

A couple people got a little queasy but that’s it.

Jesse and then Bob up on deck

All went well and it was a great day and every thing worked perfect on the boat all the time. The toilet, the engine etc all worked well. All guests were considerate and had fun.

The news for the day was an America Cup boat got de-masted in the harbor although we did not see it.
