Mast steps - first one!

Debbie bought our first mast step from Downwind Marine. The sign of things to come :)

This is a “Sea Dog” aluminum folding mast step. We did our research and this is the type and material and manufacturer we decided we want.

This step folds when not in use to extend only 1-1/2" from the mast. Rounded design eliminates chance of halyards fouling with step in closed position. Step has full 5" tread width. Nylon adjusting screw eliminates rattling when step is in folded position. Base is contoured to fit mast and drilled for four 1/4" flat head fasteners. Step can be pop riveted or bolted as well.

 We were concerned that the contour was going to make theses un-usable on our flat sided mast. We had one dock mate who sanded them down to make them flat. We had another who said the would not work.
 We called Downwind marine and talked to JD who has a boat just like ours (Islander Freeport) and he said he had a few at the top of his mast and they work great.
 We also called Sea Dog and they said the world wouk great with out a problem.
 So we like them and now feel comfortable with ordering more.
