March 2012 - Currently at Marina Kona Kai Shelter Island San Diego, CA
Note:
Debbie has gotten quite good at this and she now does this on a regular basis. Not so elaborate now but just as good. We are using "Marino" for the bedding now.
The night was approaching and we had pretty much got everything set up. The blue tape and small tools for this job etc. Debbie wrapped the area with blue tape and brown paper. We use a feller gauge for this type of work and it is really useful for stuffing in the 3M 4000 UV Marine Adhesive in hard to get at places..
We tried as we could
but could not get the 3M 4000 UV out of the tube.
We had to resort to cutting
it open. Darn waste as it was half full. We will use nowhere near that much
even as wasteful as I am.
As a side note:
The screw holes were not chamfered. I have read that when bedding deck hardware it is important to chamfer the holes so the sealant will go down them. In this case the cover is in the way so we could not do any chamfering. I also did not do that when bedding the wind generator deck mounts.
We stuffed the 3M 4000 UV into the deck joint around the chain plate and into the screw holes.
We then pressed down on the SS cover and screwed in the screws. The cabin side screw stripped out right off so we aborted this and removed the good screw. Then hunt and pecked for another screw. We found one in our SS screw stash like everyone has and it was a bit smaller in diameter but longer. We then re-caulked around the cover and re-filled the screw holes.
We now screwed down the plate again holding it down to relieve stress on the screws as they are tightened. Not letting the plate rise up then down to avoid any air pockets. The new screw found some meat and screwed in tight. We avoided that problem. Debbie pushed me to do it right. I am in the middle of a cold and it was getting pretty dark. It was cold and I was tired, ready to call it and let the 3M 4000 UV take charge of holding the cabin side of the plate in place. It is nice to have a partner to help in these spots by simply pushing a little for the job to be done correctly.
This will definitely seal
this chain plate and with some further clean up with a razor blade later it
will look great! It is dark now and cold.
