Garmin 18" HD Radar almost wired up - 2012

The SS push pull switch at the nav station will not work as it is only 10 AMPS. Most switches are the same, only rated at 10 amps. We could use a relay like is used for anchor windless installs. This would cost about the same as getting a new breaker for the nav station.
April 2012 - Currently at Marina Kona Kai  Shelter Island San Diego, CA
We decide we could open a spot at the nav station for the electronics.
Then we found a 20 amp breaker and so we replaced the 10 amp that was there.
Then we re-wired the "T" fuse block to the new (old) breaker. It was a spare that came with the boat.
GMI™ 10 Marine Instrument now working off the breaker toggle 20 amp switch.
10/2 red & black Anchor wire.
Then we wired the 10 foot of 10\2 wire we purchased at Marine Exchange to the power wires coming in from the mast of the Garmin GMR 18 HD Radar. First cutting off the 7.5 blade fuse holder (a blade fuse but small like the automotive fuse) and wired that to the T fuse block. Put in a 7.5 blade fuse and it is ready for power.
We connect one end to the RJ 45 Garmin joiner. Left the one cable we are working on un-connected till we (Debbie) is finished.

Before this I had asked Debbie to wire up the RJ 45 connector as she has lots more patience for this kind of project.
Debbie got it done but it did take a while.

Not that easy getting all eight (I think) wires lined up correctly and then into the little copper holders all at one time.

Now we find out we need a RJ 45 crimping tool. Ok so another day.

Debbie did find one in a day or so at Radio Shack. It is way more money than we want to spend for a one time deal but we got it any way.

Back at the boat another day goes by and it is time for the crimping. Debbie does the dead and all is well. Now time to full up the RJ 45 jacket over the connector. As we have all done at one time or another she gave it an awful little yank and awful crank and the RJ 45 connector was toast as it came flying off the cable. OK that’s that for the day as that was the only connector we had.

Another day and Debbie checks Shelter Marine Electronics and they have one, in fact they give us the field connector kit for free! They even mention using their tool for crimping, too late we got one, darn should have asked before 😊

OK now the connector is ready to go on again and bet Debbie has learned the lesson we all have. Sloooowly pull up the jacked being very careful not to let it yank forward😀
