Ham Radio Outlet store in San Diego- research - 2012

We went to the Ham Radio Outlet yesterday to look at alternatives to the ICOM M802 SSB radio.
April 2012 - Currently at Marina Kona Kai Shelter Island San Diego, CA
We talked to Joe (N6SIX) and he was very helpful.
There are lots but we mainly looked at ICOM’s.
There are a lot of but’s though.
For instance this one was nice but it would be hard to mount it in our boat.
It is not a marine environment equipped radio. That I have heard is only some protecting spay on the electrical board. But if we take off the cover and spray something would this not destroy any warranty?
But other sailors are not using it so what about support?
There are lots of classes on the ICOM M802 SSB  but not so with the other ICOM radios.
At any rate we were just looking.
We did buy a book though "Mariners Amateur Radio".
We have also been researching the new Pactor modem 4 also.
There is some good info on gar’s site on this docksideradio.com.
We were leaning towards a kit for the
ICOM M802 SSB , modem, antenna tuner etc but we are now thinking a smaller kit may be the answer to save some cash and to afford the newer faster modem.
Still researching this whole thing.
