The space is ready now for the Mermaid Marine Air 12000 BTU AC\Heat unit. Debbie and I went to the storage space and got it.
May - Currently At Marina Cortez Harbor Island, San Diego, CA
Then put it into my Jeep and hauled it to the marina. Then it went into a cart and to the boat. You know the drill, schlep, schlep and schlep some more. Then we unpacked it and re-measured and I fretted some and then we went for it after a while. We carried it into the boat from the dock, not that easy.
Nice! Mermaid Marine Air 12000 BTU of cool\heat for the salon!
Then which way should it face and how are we
going to duct it came into play. This has been going around in my head for a
long time. There was just no way of knowing how or if this was going to work
at all until we actually got it into the space. You can figure all you want a measure
everything over and over but till is sits here it was a guess. We had ordered a left facing unit because I originally
thought the ducting would go out the left side with the unit facing us. Not to
happen. There just is not enough room between the water heater and the AC for
ducking and this unit takes a 6 inch duck right off.
The left hand option was the correct one for us.
We probably could have gone right handed also. It is hard to tell now until we get the hoses hooked up. They would tight coming out by the wall.
Mermaid Marine Air 12000 btu unit, Its in!
Tight space to start ducking.
We decided the only real option was backwards. The backwards option has its advantages. For one it is easy to get at the hoses and re-set button. There is still at least the three inches all around the Mermaid wants for clearance. The filter is till easy enough to reach to remove and clean. OK so far so good. But what about the ducking? We scratched our heads and came up with a couple solutions.
We will make a turn right out of the unit and head back towards the water heater where we will have our first splitter. The plan continues but may change several times so that as far as were are going with this for mow. The bottom line is it is do-a-ble!
Our boats The
Islander Freeport when AC is installed have 16000 BTU units. That is the BTU
that can cool the boat.
We chose to have two Mermaid Marine Air units so a 5200 BTU for the stateroom and 12000 BTU unit for the salon area.
Total 17500 BTU. Just a bit over but better over than under.
The other option was for a Mermaid 9000 BTU unit. It is smaller in size and easier to install
because of that.
Only it is possibly not big enough for the job. It also
would run longer and work harder to keep the space cool. It does only require 4
inch ducking though.
9000 + 5200 = 14200 BTU not good enough!
So enough second guessing, we got it in place and it will work great.
Now where to put the thermostat😀 ?
