Harken Furler - Furler work

  • We dropped the jib.
  • We took apart our furler last night and we have some issues.
  • We did see some metal filings which is not good but it is probably a rigging issue.
  • We oiled it up and re-assembled it.
  • Put the jib back on and tightened the back stay some more.
  • We tried different angles on the lead block but were not having any success. I was getting too tired and was done with the project till we could get more info on things.
  • When we took out the two top socket head screws the shaft with the notches in it cam slamming down. Scared the heck out of us! Was not a big deal just not expecting it. That did mean it was not resting on the socket head nut and grinding as we thought it might be.
  • When we pulled on the furler up about head high and turned it it and it squeaked around where I was holding it. When we pushed on it and turned the furler it did not squeak. We are reluctant to tighten the back stay any more as this squeaking may suggest it is still too loose.
Now we think the furler its self is not at issue.

Of course we dropped the SS shackle into the drink but we had a similar one on the boat. Will need to get a couple of sapres.

  • We may need to get the correct size line for one. We will decide if our line is the recommended 5/16" x 70'. The length can be shorter.
  • We need to get the line feed angle correct.
  • We need to get our ratcheting end block working in the mix of things.
