Sailing to South Western YC for dinner - 2010

June 2010 - At Marina Cortez Harbor Island, San Diego, CA
We went sailing on Wednesday evening and went to South Western YC for the cook out venue. s\v Elegant'sea in the back ground tied to the guest slip. We took this picture from our table. We were dining inside. It was disappointing to us😞 They have a new venue where the servers bring you the main dish after it is cooked. I know there are SWYC  members here and I am being kind. It was just not what it was. Maybe in the a few weeks they will get it better. The outside grill used to be reasonably priced and fun. This was neither.
Plus they changed the location of the bbq grill to next to the kitchen, makes sense but is not eye pleasing. Last location was by the slips. Very nice to look out over the boats.
SWYC has great guest slips and we really like the YC. We were dining inside.

We will still go there for meals. Some time at anchor at La Playa we will dingy over for a meal (is that cheating)? We have tried going into ShelterIsland for a meal but it wrecks the anchoring experience.
One of Debbie’s favorite birds.
We had a nice sail over to the sub base where we decided to put in a tack but it was too short (early) so we could not make the channel. We or I was on a schedule as to not miss dinner. I did not know what time SWYC stopped serving. If we had gone higher, in this case to the sub base we could have probably tacked into the channel. It however was a great little sail and we were just clipping along.
It was bear can night and of the many boats we saw this on of particular interest.

The Harken jib furler line I got set upp right this time. But the furler did not furl very well again. This time it was not the line that was jamming or had ass holes in it. It was the furler. We think the back stay or the jib halyard are too tight or both. We had to remove the furler and bow pulpit when we replaced the bow rollers so this is left over from that project. We can make some adjustments this Saturday as we will hopefully sail to a test anchor on Sunday at La Playa .

As we have sailed the boat these last two times we have noticed how well it points. We point as well as any other boat out there and that is saying something. Even with our tired ass old sails and rigging (well the standing rigging may be fairly new) and old sheets etc.

We especially love how the boat steers and handles and rides the bay. We have not done any offshore sailing in the boat yet. The bay can get quite whipped up with all the power boats running about. Sometimes more so that the ocean. We may (in our old boat) come back from a sail and find the bay more whipped up than the sea.

We are just loving the boat more and more.

We were getting back so late it was getting a bit dark. It way about 9:00 PM and so we put on the running lights. None of them worked. I hit the port light a few time (that’s how you really turn it on right, you hit kick it?) and it would work for a flashes. Seems the bulbs are loose or whatever. Another FOGger was mentioning this as an issue. Maybe we can silicone them in place or something. We like the old lights for the harbor. We turned on the tri color at the mast top and it worked fine. Know it is not legal but figured it was better than nothing. Not a big deal has it was a near full moon and so the harbor was pretty light. Even when there is no moon the harbor is light up from all the San Diego lights. It’s had not to see another boat or ship. The navy ships are a little hard to see because they are the dark gray but they want it that way.
