We called the Barra Marina dealer and they said if the engine does not overheat then no worries? It could get worse? We were going to do the overnighter right around the Cape (Cabo Corrientes). We decided to go into Punta Perula Bay - Chamela to anchor and think it over. The next day we sailed off the hook and sailed all day and into the night, tacking into the NW wind. Three hours out making no headway then three hours in to make forward progress. It was going to take about three days. We were pinching hard all the time. The boat did excellent but we got really tired. We decided to motor at about 4 knots. The engine raw water pump did hold up. It was a long hard passage. We bought a spare raw water pump! Also had this one rebuilt. The bearing had worn and was leaking. Fortunately, the pump is on the side of the engine so the leak didn't get water all over the belts. So the moral of this sea story is always have a spare raw water pump!
We are currently cruising our Islander Freeport 36 sailboat in Mexico. We have been extensively documenting our outfitting for this adventure. Also, what works and what is not of value.
Two years ago a raw water pump reminder, spaere is a must have - 2021
We learned a lot from this leaking raw water pump two years ago. We were starting our rounding of Cabo Corrientes and were close to Punta Perula Bay - Chamela, a small fishing village that we were by. Amazingly we got cell service five miles off shore of Punta Perula Bay - Chamela! June 2021 - We are currently in Paradise Village Marina in Banderas Bay Mexico (by Puerto Vallarta)
