We finished the propane locker - 2012

2012 - Marina Kona Kai Shelter Island San Diego, CA

Here you can see the brackets and regulator.

Another project to finish was the propane locker. We had to drill holes for the propane hose pass through fitting and a fitting for the propane sensor wires. his box is going in the port lazaret.

The box holds two 2.5 gal composite propane bottles. We decide on the 2.5 gal tanks as they are easy to dingy in and carry on a bus if need be to refill. There is at this time no box you can buy for two composite bottles. So of course we had to make one. They actually hold over 2.5 gal, more like six gal total. We installed a regulator the will automatically switch over to the other tank f the current one goes empty, it raises a red flag so you can see the tank was empty. No interruption at the stove. We had one for the grill also but had to remove one tank so now we even have a spare!
At Downwind Marine Criss made us up a new shorter propane hose for the tanks to the stove but we chose to use the long one we had because we do not have time to snake a new hos through to the stove now. Chiss also made up hoses from the regulator to the propane tanks.

We first had to mark up where the box was going to fit and then install the two "L" brackets to hold it in place. They just hold it up and we used strapping to hold it against the refer back and a strap to hold on the lid. The box needs to come out fairly easily if there is a problem to be solved in the lazarett.

With the two "L" brackets in we could sit the box in and mark up where the through hull would go and the two pass troughs.
The through hull had to be installed in the hull. After Debbie and I messured and re messured and planed it all out we finally drilled the hole and mounted the through hull. The it was time to connect the hose to the propane box. It all went well. This whole box remember nees to come out fairley easiy so it was designed that wa and works that way.

Then it was drill the holes and install the through hull and pass throughs. Used 3M4000 UV Marine Adhesive to seal them up good.
Then plumb the regulator to the propane detector solenoid.

Then when we all done it became apparent we had to move the refer compressor up a 1/2 inch. We carefully moved the refer mount and the top for the propane box fit well. The lid slides off nicely.
Debbie put some extra spray foam on the pass through to the refer R-5 just for more protection.
We will post pictures of the now working finished propane box.
