We wanted the back part of the upper lift where the cam cleat is to be lower than the bimini so it would be easy to install when needed and we also wanted the lift to still be high enough to lift motors up to 15 hp up off the stern rail and onto a dingy. We have accomplished this. When we are not using the lift we can remove it and store it away easily.
We plan at a later time to make a wide outboard motor mount on the rail. We would like the motor to be further to the starboard side. Also with a four stroke eight horse motor we will need the additional room. Likely the motor we will get and we are hoping to keep this 4 hp two stroke as a spare if storage allows. So with that in mind we built the lift to support that future configuration. We can still adjust the lift by moving the stern rail motor lift bracket to the port or starboard as we see fit.
We have not tried the motor lift yet because we have not gotten the stern rail support straps bolted on the boat yet. No sense taking chance on bending the rail even though this would be unlikely as the two stroke 4 hp is not very heavy.
