Dorads and rain water - 2011

We were getting rain water in the bilge area every time it rained. Now we like a dry bilge period. So we did some tests to see where it was coming from. We thought it may be coming from inside the mast or a leaking cap rail. First though we decide to cover the  Plastimo Dorads.

We are talking with JD at Downwind Marine in San Diego about ordering two of these red “B” dorads from Plastimo Dorads.

If you remember we lost one to bad weather crossing the sea of Cortez from Cobo to Mazatlán Mexico.

Inquiring about new Vetus dorads - 2011

We sent VETUS America an email inquiring about their dorads (cowl ventilators). We are thinking of replacing ours. It is getting time to consider it. It is no longer just cosmetic as they leak water into the bilge.

Cleaning Dorads - no rain flap 2015

So, we are cleaning up the boat little by little after months of neglect on the cleaning front. The re-power and new teak and holy sole along with the re-upholster and a long winter has taken its toll.

New Dorads are installed, one from storm loss - 2013

Used the Dremel tool to cut away the flange deep enough for the new dorad base to fit in.

 We got the dorads in finally. We lots one in a storm during the passage from Cobo to Mazatlán.

 As you can see the new dorads look good. They are not quite as high as the originals and that is OK.

Both dorad covers now done for summarizing the boat - 2021

Both of our dorad covers are now done. Debbie finished off second one a day or so ago. It will keep these dorads clean and any bugs out etc during the summer.

Under the storage cabinet in the bed are there was a florescent light.

 The storage cabinet has the dorad vent pipe that flows to the bilge. I think when you put the blower on it sucks air in from the dorads. 

Dorad Screens seem to working - 2012

Out of all the places to have screens on the boat we thought we had them all covered. Debbie is in the process of making one for the companionway. But at the swap meet Mike and Holly had a couple of dorad screens they gave us. Hmmm, now where else could the little critters get in?

Now to get a coat of red paint on these dorads!
