We purchased a OceanSignal MOB 1 AIS Man Overboard Device. It was at a good price on eBay. Brand new with a seven-year battery.September 2022 - Currently in Paradise Village Marina in Banderas Bay Mexico (by Puerto Vallarta)
Debbie and I are the only ones around when we are miles out doing a passage especially an overnight or two. In Mexico where we sail there is no one else around usually. No Boat US or Coast Guard etc, just us.
So, if one of us were to fall overboard it would be up to the other to do a rescue. We are always tethered to the boat but there could be a time we would have to let the tether free and drift off. We have our Vesper AIS system, and it has a loud AIS alarm that will definitely wake up Debbie or me if one of us goes over. We modified the siren. Also, it marks a MOB spot on the chart plotter. It has a strobe etc. It will also set off a DSC alarm on the VHF. We sometimes have that off at night to save the batteries while sailing.
I have been wanting to get two for a while, but they are a bit pricey for us. So, one this year and maybe one next year. We will set it up and test it out when we get back. In the meantime, when Debbie gets off watch and goes to bed, we will switch out life jackets so I will have the MOB 1 or visa versa.
