Engineering the Kato Marine Island Davits - 2011

May 2011 - Marina Cortez San Diego, CA
Not our boat -  on this Islander Freeport 36' there is not any room for mounting an outboard. Do not know what they did with their outboard?

When we install the Kato Marine Island Davits we still need room to have an outboard motor mounted on the rail.

We will want to have a wind generator and pole. The wind generator we cannot determine until the davits are in place. Then we can figure out the wind generator and pole and then the motor lift setup.

It seems where our current 4 hp Mercury outboard is located now is the best option.  The rest of the stern rail has bimini hardware taking up space. We will be getting a 9 -15 hp motor and it should fit in the same location. On which side the motor will mount is still up for debate.
Not our boat - on this Freeport thy are mounted a lot farther inboard.
It matters for the size of the dingy and support of the stern rail where they are mounted.
This boat actually has a large dingy.
Our boat, s\v Elegant'sea.
So that means we want to mount the Kato Marine Island Davits possibly inboard a bit more, we are talking inches here. Now this brings up an issue of the blower motor exhaust SS scoops that are on the stern. The blower motor is of questionable value. Could they the exhaust scoops be removed and that spare used for the davit mounts? Possible, but they still may mount in the same location as the Islander Freeport that is the example boat. That is just outside the back stay to port and starboard.

My thinking is we need to order the Extended transom base that hold the davits onto the boat at the bottom.

Then install the Kato Marine Island Davits onto the stern rail and that way we can play around with the davits for location. By holding the bottom brackets onto the boat (duck tape? J) may work we can find the location that will work for us.

Once the davit location if firm we can then measure for the support straps as they may go inboard rather than outboard of the davits.

As for a dingy we are just not sure.  We are still debating the rib versus the blow up bottom. It will be an inflatable. Length will probably in the high eight to nine foot range.

We have found a good deal locally on Harken blocks for the 6.1 system so we do not need to order them.
The attached pictures show our boat with the outboard motor on the stern rail. OK it is hard to see through the shade screen.  They also show the exhaust blower scoops that could be in the way of the davit lower brackets.

We are trying to find out if this base is made for a particular spot on the transom?
We may just order these for now:
Secure-It stainless steel ratchets
Flag socket (twin clamp style)
And Cam Cleats:

Also a boat mate (Hinze) was asking why we could not leave the Kato Marine Island Davits the height they are? So we are looking into this.
