I started this varnish project with Epifanes clear varnish and ran out, then used Pettit FLAGSHIP
VARNISH gloss and then got some more Epifanes and finished it off with Epifanes!
We are currently cruising our Islander Freeport 36 sailboat in Mexico. We have been extensively documenting our outfitting for this adventure. Also, what works and what is not of value.
Summer pickle for Beta 38 hp diesel motor/impeller talk - 2020
We did some motor work on our Beta Marine 38 hp diesel motor and had Luis do the summer maintenance. That includes changing all fluids and filters, cleaning heat exchanger and new "O" rings etc. He also checked the transmission fluid - it was clean and the correct amount.
Propeller Shaft: Removed nuts then put on cone "D" zinc and bracket - 2020
We had the two nuts and cotter pin removed from the propeller shaft and put the bracket and cone zinc on instead. The bronze 1\4" washer (1 1\4 shaft hole) stayed on. Back to the way it came out of the factory. While anchored in Tenacatita, I cleaned the bottom and found that we lost the cone zinc and bracket that holds it and the washers.
We figured out why the impeller went bad - 2020
We think that the impeller was this way because the engine was not run in the off season as it was supposed to be. When we came back from our trip North......
WOW! The impeller was close to toast! - 2020
We rounded Cabo Corrientes (Cape
of Currents) with this impeller!. Several of the tabs are near breaking right off. The broken off tabs of course would have probably clogged up the heat exchanger.
Our new battery caps we installed - 2020
The Water Miser Battery Caps on our fairly new LTH batteries. We keep our house batteries under our settee. These will help keep the battery water consumption down and eliminate most fumes.
Companionway doors are finished being varnished - 2020
After trying to prep the companion way doors, we decided to put it off as we were too busy with our end of season cruising. When we got back to Puerto Vallarta in June, we realized we would need them for the a/c and we had lots to do to summarize the boat.
Our first Estafeta shipment has arrived! - 2020
Yes, once our estafeta package shipped it only took about 5 days or so to get here.
We have another smaller package that we are building and we will see how it does. This does prove that it does work.
Almost summer-ready here in Paradise! - 2020
Our Achilles LSI-310E dinghy is all cleaned and ready to be stored away (as of this writing, it is now stored away). We washed up our dinghy chaps and Debbie will do some sewing repair on them where needed. Our sails are down, washed and dried and also stored away along with our stack-pack, lazy jacks and reef lines etc. Our halyards are protected etc. Our deck is...

Home port attempt for "Los Angeles" - 2020
Putting on the new home port of "Los Angeles" ended up being a bust.
But here is how we did it before ripping it off.
New TELCEL WiFi modem, good internet on the boat for summer at least - 2020
Thank you Danny & Deborah on s/v Cyclades for telling us about the TELCEL modem! Now our summer lock down and lock in will be much more enjoyable!
Working on our summer deck shade, bow - 2020
The next piece to be made is to the bow pulpit. All is well here. We went for a nice long walk this morning and had a nice breakfast at 3x3 restaurant (3x3 Authentic Food), a cool place we know of here. Yesterday we had fish and chips at the YC (Vallarta Yacht Club).
Barra De Navidad diver found for wet suit - 2020
Standing on "G" dock in the Marina Puerto de la Navidad (Barra Marina) is Roberto "Beto".
Last year he had asked us to bring him a wet suit from the US so we did. When we returned in the winter, we could not find him. Finally, after coming back from Zihuatanejo, we found hm! Here he is in his new suit.
