Debbie and I have had a BBS long ago before
the internet and we ran it for quite a while. This was back when Windows 3.0
first came out and our BBS was called Windows-R-Us. We know modems from 2400
baud to 9600 baud etc. Knowing this we wanted to be able to see the modem
lights easily for trouble shooting the sending\receiving of email through the
Sailmail program on the PC. That meant mounting the Pactor modem where we could
see the idiot lights and yet not having it take up valuable nav station space and
not cutting holes or building shelves for it. We came up with to us the best spot.
Just under the radios. This would mean the door that lifts up to access the nav
staion storage are on the desk would be limited a bit in the amount it opens.
We tried testing this out several times and decide the small amount of limitation
was not going to hurt the access for us.
So now how to mount the modem under the shelf?
We came up with the idea of
using the engine sound proofing screw tabs used when you do not want to drill a
hole for screws to hold the insulation in place. These are threaded and long
enough to go through the shelf. We can access them by pulling out the wood face
to the radios.
We picked up four of them from Marine Exchange
and used 3M 5200 to hold them onto the top of the modem.
Next we will make a template
and drill the holes for mounting.
