April 2011 - At Marina Cortez Harbor Island, San Diego, CA
Yes we also agree about leaving the eye brows alone. That is if they are in decent shape. Ours are and we like the looks. There are fewer and fewer boats with these features around making ours more unique. It cost extra $$ to do this journey work and we all know the production boats now are not into that. Also it is true it will reduce maintenance, however I think plain teak would look belter to us than some other options. In fact that is what we have now as we have not gotten to varnishing one (stripped it) of the eye brows and the others are peeling off varnish.
We are not retired yet and it would seem when retired putting on a couple coats of varnish every six months would be a soothing exercise, We do not mind varnishing at all actually. if we were not working forty hours a week which we will not be. Then again in Mexico where the sun is stronger who knows. But ours are staying ande we will live with them all varnished up and then decide if we want to let them fade.
Once the eye brows are gone they are gone forever, no turning back. So it is something to sleep on.
That was one of our wish list items we did not get when buying our cruising boat.
1. Less teak – now we am getting to like it on this boat because the boat is not a teak tunnel. It is bright and airy.
2. Good through hole access – not as important when living aboard to us as we will be leaving some open
3. Good engine access – not bad now with the Beta
4? I think I forgot something J
Less and less Freeports are up for sale that are not “customized” from the factory condition. That was one of the selling points of our boat.
Single owner.
Never a smoker
No pets
Not much in the way of customizing
Only run on the freeway, low miles, and at 20 MPH
Course he could have customized it with teak and holly sole throughout and that would have save us some $$😀
