We had lost the ability to flush the toilet by using the foot lever due to a broken VacuFlush water pump since day two of the Baja Ha Ha 2012. That is almost three months. We had tried a repair of the toilet water pump in place but it failed. So for all this time we were using a small bucket of water to flush it. Kind of a pain.
First you need to press the foot pump pedal down to slowly pour water into the toilet as the waste goes away. Then add some more fresh water after it is done and the foot pump valve is closed for the next time. This keeps a small amount of water in the bowl. Of course this means watching your waste and filling a bucket of some water etc.
Not now, it works as it should. You do your thing, close the lid and press the pedal, count to three and wash your hands. No need to look or fill the bucket.
The field repair was to an old water valve that had previously given up the ghost. We re-positioned the O ring and then sealed it with 3M 5200. There was not much hope of this actually working but what the heck. It has worked now for a couple days so it looks like it will last.
Our new pump was ordered through Downwind Marine (the cruisers chandlery as they quote themselves). They shipped the new VacuFlush water pump and some furler screws to Nuevo Vallarta, Paradise village marina but they did not make it. They ended up needing some duty and after two months are back at Downwind Marine. Plus we ordered them a month before we were to be in NV yet they did not ship them until we were there for two days of a ten day stay! So much for getting parts.
Now we can hopefully field repair the broken toilet water pump for a spare.
Life's little pleasures are back in a small way.
