Whale Gulper IC Diaphragm Bilge Pump needs a new sensor - 2020

This sensor\strainer fits in the end of the hose that goes to the bilge. Hose not shown.
The sensor on our Whale Gulper IC Diaphragm Bilge Pump is not working. We tested the switch and it is OK. So we pulled out the hose from the bilge with the sensor\strainer on the end. Then we cleaned it all up and tested it again in a bucket of water. No go.
July 2020 - We are currently in Paradise Village Marina in Banderas Bay Mexico (by Puerto Vallarta)
The yellow and black pump is the IC pump.
The hose goes onto the empty hose barb on the pump and the sensor is at the end of the hose with the cord coming back up to the pump where it plugs n.
The Whale Gulper IC Diaphragm Bilge Pump still works if we turn it to force it on but does not detect water so it does not go off automatically. This is our everyday bilge pump.
This zinc, that looks like a fish, we wire tie to the hose by the sensor so when the pump starts pumping the hose does not flop all around.😊
Looking down into the deep bilge where the hose and sensor\strainer sits.
 Yup, down there.
Looking down at our two flappers. One is a bilge high water alarm and the other is a flapper for the Rule 2000 bilge pump. It is set higher than our  Whale Gulper IC Diaphragm Bilge Pump everyday pump.

Our third pump is a Jabsco Model 6600j pump that came with our boat..this is another story.
Testing the ensor.
We ordered a new sensor (SI3422b) from Fisheries Supply which is a special order and we will probably get it in about two months or so as the are ordering. Shipped to Estafeda then to us.
So another Summer project being tackled!

  1. Those dang sensors!

Back in 2012, we put four of the Whale Gulper IC bilge pumps on our catamaran (Day Dreamer, Privilege 42). I love the pumps -- they work well and are holding up just fine, except for the sensors. One of the sensors (engine room bilge) went out in 2018. Another one (main bilge) went out earlier this year (2020). I ordered two replacement sensors from Fisheries Supply back in 2018 and just used the second one. Ordering another pair of sensors today.

Several people have told me this type of sensor will be ruined if they get oil on them. But I don't think that's it. Both of my engine room pumps have seen oil occasionally over the years and worked fine afterwards. And the one that went out in the main bilge has no obvious source of oil contamination.
