Our criteria for a back up app for our chart plotter was affordability and use off-line...no phone or WiFi connection. This Navionics app works without both and is really affordable.
December 2018 -We are currently in Paradise Village Marina in Banderas Bay Mexico (by Puerto Vallarta) Of course, we have paper charts and a hand held GPS (which we plan on upgrading soon). We can also get position data from the Standard Horizon Matrix GX 2150 VHF and ICOM 802 SSB but if the electronics go out, so do they.
Here Debbie has made a route for heading South.
The app shows all the proper buoy markers and depths.
Here we are on land, well the Samsung Galaxy 4 tablet is.
This inexpensive tablet has worked fine for us now for some years.

This Navionic app just makes it easier to see things and follow a route etc and for not much money if things go wrong with our Garmin GPSMAP 740 chartplotter.
We were using the iSailor app but they changed. Then the apps maps stopped working that we had purchased. The new maps were twice as much so we got our money back. iSailor required us to purchase two regions instead of one and this is why it was twice as much for Mexico.
