Nerw davit winch purchased for backup - 2024

While cruising up in the Sea of Cortez this past season we had trouble with our davit winch. The remote sensor we found had developed some loose wiring in it. We repaired it by reserved the wires and it started working again. In the interim we had tried using alligator clips on the motor studs and connected to the batteries for on and off, raising and lowering.

It worked however after getting the dinghy up the motor would not lock and the dinghy would slowly be lowered by itself, sometimes quite a bit. Seeing as in the SoC we have been sailing with the dinghy fully loaded, gas tank, outboard, dinghy wheels etc. on it we thought this would be too dangerous as it could unwind any time while sailing along.
When we gave the motor on the dinghy, we turn the dinghy around but without the motor on it the dinghy it fits better this was as the motor is on the rail.
A spare winch has been on our backup list for a few years as ours is about nine years old. We use it quite a bit while cruising. It makes a huge difference when raising the dinghy and especially now that I am 77 and close to being 78 years old. So, we just went to Harbor Freight and picked up a spare Badlands 2500 winch. We gave the parts we did not want to our grandson who helped me strip it of the cable, hook, shackle and cable guide. It also makes it lighter for the trip back to Mexico! We use the wireless remote and will keep the wired remote as backup.
