Preparing front of storage area under the bed for varnishing - 2025

The storage area under the bed is the last major place on our Islander Freeport 36' sailboat plan B that has not been varnished.

That will end tomorrow when we get the first coat on. We spent some of yesterday and today prepping the area. Where the door to the storage area opens there were some dings and chips in the teak which I was mostly able to sand out. The boat is 46 years old so some that is to be expected. It gives it some character. I sanded it with #220 wet sandpaper which I wetted with TSP and also repeatedly sprayed it and sanded and wiped. The TSP gets the excess oil and also dirt out of the teak. A day to dry and we varnish!
It is a lot more work than it sounds.
After the the teak dried out it needed some more san8ng and that's what you see in the following pictures. The teak is sanded and I am shining a light on it. Now ready for the first coat of varnish!
