The new Jabsco (JAB 29450-1701 3017) engine raw water pump
we purchased for a backup.
OK, so for years we have wanted to purchase a backup raw water pump...
August 2019 - s\v Elegant'sea is currently in Paradise Village Marina in Banderas Bay Mexico (by Puerto Vallarta) (We are currently in Chatsworth, CA)
...yet each time we looked at the $500.00 + USD price tag and said maybe next year. Well we experienced the hassle of our raw water pump leaking and said NOW we are getting a spare!
On Amazon. Same pump.
We wanted a plug and play pump. Meaning, just switch it out. We did our research and talked to Beta Marine and posted in the Beta Marine Forum. They said they have a new pump:
"We have a replacement pump made by RFT in stock. These have proven extremely reliable and also use the same impeller. The cover plate seal is an O ring.
This pump fits exactly the same as the original pump on your engine.
Pump list price is $335 and you will need a hose barb which is about $10."
We said great and we will purchase it. First we wanted to know for sure if we could just swap it out. After several emails etc we decided it was worth taking a chance. It also used the same impeller as the.Jabsco (JAB 29450-1701 3017) pump.
So we searched all over for the pump "RFT" online but did not find it. Figured it was a Beta thing. Se we called Beta Marine on the West Coast and ordered the pump. It was about $318.00 with shipping + tax. OK we can do that.
Remember what they say, "you never regret one penny of the money you spend on the boat when you are 10 km out in the middle of nowhere."
Well that was us,about 10 km out side of Chamela Bay a small fishing village and on our way to round Cabo Corrientes (Cape
of Currents) when our bilge pump started going off. Turned out the engine raw water pump was leaking. There is a link to the story above. Anyway we pulled the plug and purchased the pump.
Guess what we got in the mail today.
Yes this Jabsco (JAB 29450-1701 3017) raw water pump. Exactly the same as the pump we have! That is great and we spent about $200.00 + USD less then if we had purchased it somewhere else. So what happened to the "RFT" pump they said they have in stock? We do not know nor do we care as we have what we wanted and it is affordable.
