February 2013 – Marina Puerto de la Navidad (Barra
Marina) in Bahia de Navidad, Mexico
No day seems to go as planned. We were going to work on re-marking anchor rode but we got to talking with Hogan Sails over the VHF and he had zippers available for our Shade Tree project. We wanted 160” with four pulls, white. Amazing...so we had to get over there to pick them up as he was going to be there all morning. Hogan Sails is usually on the morning VHF net.

We went to Hogan Sails for some zippers for our Shade Tree(ST) projects. Both ST’s need zippers installed to fit by the shrouds. We took the Dingy from Marina Puerto de la Navidad to Barra , the town at the Sands Hotel where we stern anchored and tied up at the Sands. Then we walked the mile or so to Hogan's house where he has his shop.
Ray has the white hat on then Hogans girlfriend and Ray's friend then Debbie.
Hogan.
While there we met Rachel the little girl
which is Hogan’s live in partner's daughter.
I did not get a picture of the shredded sail but it was in bad shape.
Ray had brought his sails to Hogan's for repair as they got blown out in a blow.
Ray's boat the
S\V Pavane II who lent us their hot knife. They are at the Marina Puerto de la Navidad also.
We walked back
through Barra and picked up some supplies for the boat (food) and I had some
taco’s from a street vender. Mmmm good.
Back at the boat we put up the forward ST and marked it up
for cutting. Then we took a dock walk because there are a couple boats here
witht their ST’s up. We wanted to see how they did theirs. That ended up taking
hours because of all the chit chat etc.
Back at the boat we marked up the forward ST. A time
consuming task.
Then we took down the stern one and Debbie made the cuts with the hot knife. Then we put it back up yet again for a test-see. It was unfortunately off by some inches. Also the cut was not high enough. Better see now then after the zippers are sewn in. So down it came and Debbie will re-cut the stern ST again. We have limited time with the hot knife as the S\V Pavane will be leaving soon. So, once the cuts are made, Debbie will begin sewing in the zippers (with our Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1 Sewing Machine, the zigzag model with hand crank) and chafe protection for the holes.
