Icom M-802 is now working with stand-alone GPS - 2023

We have our GPS antenna connected to our Icom M802 SSB radio and are getting time, longitude and latitude data! This means to us that we can press the emergency red button (like on the VHF) and send an emergency call around the globe with our position. Also, our Icom radio is now a standalone system, no longer dependent on the VHF or backbone network for the position data!

The GPS antenna came from Amazon and was less than $50.00. It could have been an AURACURE 12v nautical receiver. They are not for sale anymore but lots of them like this one are available on other sites. This one did not come with any instructions. It needs to work in 4800 baud and send the sentence (GGA) in NMEA 0183. The GPS has five wires:

Red to 12v power.

Black to 12v ground.

Yellow to the center wire on the BNC connector.

The shield wire (wrapped in a silver shield) to the same on the GPS antenna.

The green wire is not used although I had tried it first!).

We talked with "DockSide Radio" who gave us really great support! We also got some good help from the FB "Offshore SSB Radio and Email" group.

We had purchased the BNC connector with wires from "DockSide Radio". He had some a year ago or so when we purchased it but he was not going to make anymore because the new Icom M803 comes with a built-in GPS. You could use a female BNC connector like in the picture though.

Now to solder it all up, snaking the wires and stashing the GPS antenna in the lazarette someplace etc.
