Stern anchoring in Chacala with our Fortress anchor #16 - 2012

After stern anchoring with our Fortress anchor #16 and see how hard it is pulling up 20’ chain I looked up the amount of chain recommended on the Fortress web site.
12-9-2012 Anchored in ChacalaMexico

“We recommend using 6 ft (2m) of chain for every 25 ft (8m) of water depth. Coastal anchoring is often in under 50 ft (16m) of water depth, and so boaters commonly use 10-15 feet (3-5m) of chain with their Fortress anchors.”

So we will cut ours down to about 10’ half the 20' we have. It does not seem like much weight. You can hold the anchor in one hand but add the chain and lift it up from the bottom in a dingy and it gets heavy. Anything to do it right and make it easier at the same time!
Note 2018:
After cutting the chain to about 10 feet we have had great success with the Fortress anchor #16 while stern anchoring.

  1. Try setting the main bow anchor first then back off farther than the scope you will be using, then drop the stern anchor off the boat and pull forward letting out some scope while taking in some bow line, then set the stern anchor. Now pull forward more taking in the excess bow line while paying out the stern line at the same time, until you have the scope you want on your bow line. When leaving let out the scope on the bow line while taking in the stern line, then pull up the stern anchor and move forward taking in the bow line until you bow anchor is up. No need to drop the stern line from the dinghy when you do it this way, and the stern anchor is set better.
